2/9/2017 0 Comments Chapters 1-3In the first Chapter of our text The Flat World and Education, written by Linda Darling-Hammond, we read about lagging achievement in academics in the United States. President George H. W. Bush along with 50 governors, set goals to make the United States number one academically in the world in mathematics and science by the year 2000. Unfortunately by the year 2006 the United States was ranked 21st out of 30 countries in those categories. At first I had a hard time believing the statistics, but then I think about my students and their interests and goals, and education is not a priority. There are many distractions due to technology, athletics, parent pressure, and the students social lives. These are some of the distractions that prevent student interest in academics.
Taking into consideration what is taking away from student academic interest, it is our job within the school system to determine how to keep them interested and motivated academically in today's society. Being a part of this master’s program and working with young adults who are in the process of getting their degrees, allows me to better understand the education process and guide them to success in today’s world.
