9/12/2017 0 Comments Transliteracy1) How does transliteracy change your current thoughts on the content you deliver?
I find myself teaching a bit different these days. I try my best to deliver messages that can be confirmed, or reaffirmed by my players. For example, if we go over a new hitting technique that will help my players hit the ball to the opposite field, I like the idea that later that day or one day down the road, maybe then can find that hitting lesson on there phones. I feel like you really need to be on your game these days with the message or lesson that you deliver. For me, its sharing as many different styles so that a player can find one that works for him. 2) How do see the incorporation of transliteracy teaching methods increasing student inclusion and engagement? Baseball has been using video as a learning tool for years, but technology has gotten so much better over the years, that learning and sharing is a breeze. One drill we use in our baseball program is videoing hitting. We get with partners and video each others swings, critiquing from the head down to feet. After the hitting drills for the day is over, we get with new partners and go over our swings on the big screen. This gives us the opportunity to have multiple eyes see our swings. We also have the opportunity to take this video and share it with hitting coaches, and or compare it to other players swings. 3) Your own thoughts... All and all, for what I do, the more I learn and the more I pass on, the better my players are going to get. And their success is the ultimate goal. Dan

2/9/2017 0 Comments My Driving QuestionBeing a baseball coach gives me the opportunity to meet many different types of Student Athletes. Typically, Junior College Baseball players decide to attend the College based on location, cost, and leaving situations. This means as a coach, whatever shows up, is what I get. My driving question is based off of fairness to the players. Some players might have many qualities, but don't fit the coaches personality, or playing style. And based off of the reasons for coming to the College, that means if the coach doesn't want you, your playing days are over.
My Driving Question: Can I look passed my comfort, and find the quality in each player, making them a successful College Athlete? 2/9/2017 0 Comments Chapters 1-3In the first Chapter of our text The Flat World and Education, written by Linda Darling-Hammond, we read about lagging achievement in academics in the United States. President George H. W. Bush along with 50 governors, set goals to make the United States number one academically in the world in mathematics and science by the year 2000. Unfortunately by the year 2006 the United States was ranked 21st out of 30 countries in those categories. At first I had a hard time believing the statistics, but then I think about my students and their interests and goals, and education is not a priority. There are many distractions due to technology, athletics, parent pressure, and the students social lives. These are some of the distractions that prevent student interest in academics.
Taking into consideration what is taking away from student academic interest, it is our job within the school system to determine how to keep them interested and motivated academically in today's society. Being a part of this master’s program and working with young adults who are in the process of getting their degrees, allows me to better understand the education process and guide them to success in today’s world.
